Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning occurs because CO bonds more effectively to the hemoglobin in red blood cells than oxygen does. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) works in two ways: it can allow the blood plasma to carry enough oxygen to support life functions, irrespective of the blood cells and it can help oxygen to outcompete the CO molecules on hemoglobin binding sites. CO poisoning is dependent on exposure and may be an emergency situation.

Carbon Monoxide binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells at the sites usually utilized to carry oxygen to the tissues, but does so about 240 times more tightly than oxygen, forming a compound called carboxyhaemoglobin. This means that if both Carbon Monoxide and oxygen (O2) are inhaled, Carbon Monoxide will preferentially bind to haemoglobin. This reduces the amount of haemoglobin available to bind to oxygen, so the body and tissues become O2 starved.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is seen especially in the brain, causing the brain to swell, leading to unconsciousness and neurological damage. Carbon Monoxide also causes direct central nervous system cellular injury through mechanisms that include disturbance of energy metabolism and intracellular production of oxygen free radicals.

A colourless, odourless gas resulting from incomplete combustion, carbon monoxide (CO) can be found in vehicle exhaust fumes, house fires, poorly maintained oil or gas heaters and the fumes of certain solvents. The fact that there are no obvious signs to the presence of the gas has led to it being termed the "silent killer".

Symptoms of CO poisoning include:

-Fatigue.
-Headaches.
-Rapid pulse.
-Nausea.
-Loss of consciousness.
-Neurological effects can become evident some weeks following the exposure, even after apparent recovery.

Although many people with CO poisoning can be revived without hyperbaric oxygen therapy, long-term damage from CO poisoning can include harm to the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. Several studies have shown that under certain conditions, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can cut the risk for brain injury and nerve damage. 

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) dissolves additional oxygen in the blood plasma and has been shown to block all known cellular mechanisms of CO toxicity.
