Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has several specific biological
actions which can enhance wound healing processes. Hyper-oxygenation of tissue,
vasoconstriction, down regulation of inflammatory cytokines, up-regulation of
growth factors, antibacterial effects, potentiation of antibiotics, and
leukocyte effects.
Gas Gangrene is an acute, rapidly invasive infection of the
muscle characterized by profound toxemia, extensive edema, massive death of
tissue and variable degree of gas production. To put in simple terms, Gas
gangrene is a serious infection secondary to the gas forming bacteria
Clostridium. This bacteria contaminates the wound and allows gas to get trapped
under the skin, killing body tissue.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is able to combat clinical infection
such as gas gangrene by acting directly on anaerobic bacteria, enhancing
leukocyte and macrophage activity and potentiating the effects of antibiotics.
The goal of HBO therapy is to stop alpha-toxin production,
requiring tissue oxygen concentrations of 250 mm Hg, to inhibit further
bacterial growth. Also aims to keep swelling down and bacteria from spreading
to other parts of the body. The greatest reduction in mortality results from
treatment utilizing HBOT, antibiotic therapy and surgery.
Hyperbaric oxygen Therapy is a tissue, limb and life-saving treatment
of myonecrosis.
