Wrinkles are caused by a number of internal and
external factors over the course of our lifetime. Wrinkles
are a result of aging, unhealthy skin and make us look older than we are. It is well recognized
that natural ageing and sun damage are the biggest contributors to the
formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Once you understand the
science behind how and why wrinkles form, you will understand the benefits of
hyperbaric oxygen therapy in your skin care regimen, anti aging and wellness
program to prolong your
youthful look.
The dermis layer, or middle layer of the skin, that
contains the structural elements of the skin namely elastin, collagen and
other fibrous tissues continuously support the structure, shape and fullness of
the skin.
As we age the
cells divide more slowly, production
of collagen decreases, network of collagen and elastin fibers begin to
loosen and skin
cells loose the ability to retain texture, firmness, moisture and tone
resulting in formation of wrinkles.
Collagen:
When the subject of anti-aging is discussed,
collagen is forefront. Collagen is a protein which makes up most of the
cutaneous layer of the skin and fibres of other connective tissues.
Collagen is a cable-like group of white in elastic
fibres which are resistant to traction. Composed of 3 chain-links of twisted
polypeptides, each chain is made up of approximately 100 amino acid units
arranged in a defined sequence.
While the skin is made up of 5% Elastin, it is
comprised of 70% Collagen, making it an ingredient is skin aging that we cannot
overlook. Collagen production is simply part of cell metabolism, so the drastic
drop in collagen production at age, say 35, is just another indication of the
slowing of our metabolism due to aging.
With aging, Collagen
looses its suppleness, it cross links with other collagen strands and becomes
rigid so structures are hardened. With this rigidity, the skin looses its soft
suppleness.
Elastin:
Elastin is the protein which is responsibility for
the skin’s elasticity. While only making up 5% of the skin, a lack of elastin
causes loss of tone and stretch marks on the skin’s surface.
Elastin is a lighter molecule than collagen and supports collagen. It is a spider web-like structure which weaves in and out, binding collagen strands. The tightness of these strands determines the firmness in the skin.
When we mature, Elastin calcifies and looses it
flexibility which is results in loss of tone in the skin. Saggy or loose skin
is from the degeneration of the elastin protein caused by elastase (an agent
which breaks down elastin). Elastase production is caused by inflammation which is the main culprit of aging.
The primary cause behind sagging skin and wrinkles is the loss of volume due to a decrease in collagen and elastin production. Collagen is a main structural protein in skin that helps in cell renewal and overall firmness of complexion. Elastin is another protein that accommodates all our movements so skin returns to its original shape after stretching or contracting.

Collagen production:
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes the growth of collagen which is the foundation of firm new skin. Important effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy would be the stimulation of leukocyte microbial killing, the enhancement of fibroblast replication, and increased collagen formation and neovascularization of ischemic (oxygen starved) tissue. This effect is every aesthetic and cosmetic physician’s delight. Reduced wrinkles, a younger looking and supple skin.
